How Should I Split My Paycheque in My 30s?

Sep 28, 2026

If you're in your 30s, there's a good chance your money is being pulled in a lot of directions at once.

Rent or a mortgage. Childcare. A car payment. Saving for a home, or for your kids' education. Maybe a business idea you keep coming back to. And somewhere in there, you'd like to actually enjoy your life, too.

When everything feels important, it's easy to end up feeling like you're never doing enough in any direction. That's a very normal place to be. Usually it isn't a sign that you're bad with money. It's a sign that your money doesn't have a clear plan yet.

If I were in my 30s today, here's exactly how I'd organize every paycheque. I call it the 3-Category Rule.

Category 1: Needs

Your needs are the things you can't live without: housing, utilities, groceries, and transportation. These are the non-negotiables that keep your life running.

Your essential bills and minimum debt payments belong here, too. Covering these first protects your stability and keeps you out of financial trouble, which is why this category always gets funded first.

Category 2: Future You

This is where your goals live. A down payment on a home, your child's education, or the business you want to start someday.

It's also where extra debt payments go. Your minimum payments keep you afloat, but anything you pay above the minimum is an investment in your future, because every dollar you pay down now is a dollar that stops costing you interest.

Category 3: Wants

This is the fun stuff: entertainment, dining out, streaming services, and travel.

And yes, it deserves its own category. Enjoying your money is part of a healthy financial life. A plan that leaves no room for joy is usually a plan that doesn't last.

So How Much Goes Where?

Here's the split I'd start with: 50% to needs, 30% to future you, and 20% to wants.

These numbers aren't set in stone. Your percentages should fit your real life, your income, and your goals. The goal isn't perfection. It's having a system that keeps you on track without making you feel deprived.

The Order Matters

Start with what's non-negotiable. Then fund your future. Then enjoy what's left, without the guilt.

That order is what makes the system work. When your needs and your future are already taken care of, spending on the things you love stops feeling like something you have to justify.

Final Thoughts

Organizing your paycheque doesn't have to be complicated, and it doesn't have to feel restrictive. Three categories, a clear order, and percentages that fit your life can take a lot of the stress and second-guessing out of your money.

After more than 20 years as a financial planner, I've seen how much lighter people feel once their money has a plan. You don't need a raise or a perfect month to start. You can start with your very next paycheque.

If you'd like help figuring out what your own split should look like, I'd be glad to have a conversation. No pressure, just a chance to talk about where you are and what might help.
