How is advice-only planning different from working with the bank?

2026 advice-only financial planner Sep 02, 2026

I spent many years working in traditional wealth management, so I understand both models from the inside. There are many good people doing good work within banks and investment firms, but the biggest difference is how the advice is structured.

At a bank, the conversation is often focused on the accounts and products available through that institution. An advice-only financial planner looks at your complete financial life, including accounts held at different banks, employer pensions, workplace benefits, debt, taxes, cash flow, retirement, and the goals that matter to you.

The other important difference is how I am paid. My clients pay me directly for financial planning. I do not sell investments or insurance, and I do not receive a commission if you follow my recommendation.

That means I can tell you to leave an account exactly where it is if that is the best choice for you.

I also spend a lot of time educating my clients. I do not just tell you what to do. I help you understand your choices so you can make informed decisions and feel confident about what happens next.
