Do I need a financial planner if I manage my own investments?
Sep 15, 2026Do you need a financial planner if you manage your own investments?
Maybe, but probably not for the reason you think.
Choosing and managing investments is only one part of a financial plan. You may still want help deciding how much to save, which accounts to use, when you can retire, how to draw income tax-efficiently and whether your investments actually match your goals and comfort with risk.
As an advice-only planner, I do not take over your accounts or manage your money. I can review your investments, explain your fees, help you understand diversification and asset allocation, and recommend a strategy that fits your complete financial plan.
You remain in control and implement the recommendations yourself.
So, if you enjoy managing your own investments, you do not necessarily need an investment manager. You may simply need an unbiased financial planner to help make sure all the pieces are working together.
